Jesus claimed to be God

It has become popular for some in our day to say that “Jesus never claimed to be God.” The Scriptures say otherwise.

Jesus claiming to be God is largely what got him killed, and so it is a timely question for Good Friday.

What follows are some Scriptures which speak directly to Jesus' claims to deity.

Matthew 9:1-8 (NKJV)
[9:1] So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city. [2] Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” [3] And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, “This Man blasphemes!” [4] But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? [5] “For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? [6] “But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” [7] And he arose and departed to his house. [8] Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

Matthew 22:41-46 (NKJV)
[41] While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, [42] saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.” [43] He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:
[44] ‘The LORD said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’ ?
[45] “If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” [46] And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.

Matthew 26:62-66 (NKJV)
[62] And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” [63] But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” [64] Jesus said to him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” [65] Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! [66] “What do you think?” They answered and said, “He is deserving of death.

Mark 2:1-12 (NKJV)
[2:1] And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. [2] Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them. [3] Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. [4] And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. [5] When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” [6] And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, [7] “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” [8] But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? [9] “Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘ Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? [10] “But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins” —He said to the paralytic, [11] “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” [12] Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Mark 13:26-27 (NKJV)
[26] “Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. [27] “And then He will send His angels, and gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven.

Mark 14:61-62 (NKJV)
[61] But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” [62] Jesus said, I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

Luke 5:17-26 (NKJV)
[17] Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. [18] Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. [19] And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus. [20] When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” [21] And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” [22] But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? [23] “Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? [24] “But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins—He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” [25] Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. [26] And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!”

Luke 21:27 (NKJV)
[27] “Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

John 5:17-18 (NKJV)
[17] But Jesus answered them, My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” [18] Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

John 5:36 (NKJV)
[36] “But I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me

John 8:56-59 (NKJV)
[56] “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” [57] Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” [58] Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” [59] Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

John 10:22-38 (NKJV)
[22] Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. [23] And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon's porch. [24] Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” [25] Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me. [26] “But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. [27] “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. [28] “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. [30] I and My Father are one. [31] Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. [32] Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?” [33] The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.” [34] Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’ ? [35] “If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), [36] “do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? [37] “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; [38] “but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”

John 11:45-53 (NKJV)
[45] Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. [46] But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did. [47] Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. [48] “If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.” [49] And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, [50] “nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” [51] Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, [52] and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad. [53] Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death.

John 18:37 (NKJV)
[37] Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
